I have been a pipe smoker for thirty years or so. As an adjunct to my opalguy jewelry business I also have created a line of Pipe Tampers as pipe smoker's accessories. Simple and elegant, these tampers are made of hand shaped Nephrite jade “blades” with a sterling silver tamping “foot” affixed. Each tamper foot is 1/2" in diameter and each tamper is 3" long, plus or minus. The Nephrite jade types come from British Columbia, Montana, Wyoming, California and Russia. Tamper blades have been ground flat on one edge to provide a scraping edge. Depending on the shape and which edge is sharpened, this creates right -handed or left-handed tampers. Most are ground as right-handed. One pipe smoker's website administrator described these tampers as “jewelry for the pipe.”
